A Year of Geese is a year long study of goose behaviour. I post three images every month, showing the varying behaviours that are characteristic of that season.
Cheadle Royal Business Park
By March the geese in the business park are no longer one joined flock. Instead, they patrol in pairs, preparing to claim their nest site. Each pair a distance from the others. This gander watches closely over his mate, warning any goose or human who approaches too close with his stare.
Bugsworth Canal Basin
In February the flock is mostly still banding together, particularly here in the basin where there are no nest sites to fight over. But that doesn’t stop some rivalries showing between family groups over position and food.

In January the geese flock together and rivalry is mostly forgotten. On a warm sunny afternoon like this, there is plenty of time to sit ashore and preen, or to grab a drink.
